Funnily enough, I have been thinking about how to make a simple Truly gluten free cottage pie without tomatoes for a while. Why no tomatoes? Because they contain lectins and I have knocked them out of the TGF Clean diet for that reason (more to come on this; I am trialling it myself currently).
Anyway, then along comes a recipe from Elana Amsterdam that, with a couple of tweaks, will suit. She is clearly thinking along the same lectin lines as me. Check it out here: Paleo Shepherd’s Pie.
I love the idea of topping it with cauliflower mash and also adding a dash of paprika. Clearly, she calls it a Shepherd’s Pie – and you could do that with lamb, but using beef makes it a Cottage Pie actually: moot point!
Leave out the bacon, of course, as pork is not grass fed, and use a suitable TGF beef or vegetable stock, not chicken. And be careful your paprika is gluten free and not mixed with wheat to make it cheaper (some are!)
Yum, I think I’ll have this tonight.

yay another lectin warrior!!
Indeed. Our numbers are growing!
What are lectins?
Ha, THAT is a huge question for such a few little words! Many people are lectin sensitive. In essence, they are the toxins plants have in-built to stop predators (like us) eating them. Some lectins are worse than others, some affect the gut linings etc etc. I have removed them in the TGF plan just in case.
I love this idea! I can’t have tomato due to an allergy. Me and tomatoes do NOT mix. I do a variation of this using sweet potato mash. Mix onions or leeks into the mash and mmmm hmmmm. Next time I see a nice local, crisp looking cauli this will be its fate!
Ooh, you’re making me hungry. Forgot to get meat out of the freezer, dur, so fish tonight instead with leeks and mushrooms. Yum.
I’m absolutely loving your ‘clean’ diet, or paleo diet. It feels so good on my body, and besides factors that I can’t control I barely react anymore! I might try mushrooms myself, but I read somewhere they’re high in lectin as well so I might wait.
That’s fab to hear, Nele. Long may it continue. I am releasing it shortly, so thanks for guinea-pigging it! Any other comments on it before I do, please PM me.
